Freespace 2, if anything, has even fewer cutscenes than the first game, and way fewer primitive human models trying to emote to the best of their late-90s abilities. If you find this simply follow the instructions in the mod.

Check you actually need to listen to me - Have a look in the mod for a file called mod.ini.
Now that the warnings are over lets get on with the actual install.
I assume a lot of that is making do with much smaller budgets, rather than an intentional artistic choice, but it worked. Since FS2Open will run the vast majority of retail mods you're probably better off simply installing the mod for FS2Open. Now choose the BWO folder (Freespace2BWO). In the features tab, click on Select MOD. It was also refreshing to see Volition turn away from the big-budget, pseudo-Hollywood FMV approach Chris Roberts was chasing at the time. You can enable your MOD with the MOD option of the launcher. The endings of both Freespace 1 and Freespace 2 are fantastic, and in general the franchise had a more fatalistic tone than nearly anything in Wing Commander (maaaaybe 4 gets as dark). At least the long-forgotten Descent to Undermountain was built on a modified Descent engine. Freespace and Descent had nothing in common besides a dev team, and even then Parallax Software had already split into Volition (who handled Freespace) and Outrage (who did Descent 3 and collapsed after one or two more games). Note: the mod selector in the Launcher works so that you specifically select the folder of the mod. In this example case, select \freespace2\Wings of Dawn\. This was one of those dumb Interplay marketing decisions that I think may have hurt the franchise in the long run. Open the Launcher and select the mod folder as your mod the same way you did with the MediaVPs in step 7.
